Our History

Nine Decades of Music & Tradition

Since our founding in 1937, the Bendigo Highland Pipe Band has woven itself into the fabric of our city. Through war and peace, celebration and remembrance, our pipers and drummers have marched on — keeping alive the traditions of Scotland here in the heart of Central Victoria.

Timeline of Our Journey

1937

Founded in Bendigo

The Bendigo Highland Pipe Band is established, bringing the proud tradition of Scottish piping and drumming to the gold rush city of Bendigo. From the beginning, the band is dedicated to musical excellence and community service.

1940s

The War Years

During the Second World War, the band plays at recruitment drives, farewell parades, and welcome-home events for local servicemen and women. Music becomes a source of comfort and unity for the community during difficult times.

1950s – 1960s

Post-War Growth

The band enters a period of growth and renewed energy, performing at agricultural shows, sporting events, and civic ceremonies across Bendigo and surrounding towns. The distinctive sound of the pipes becomes synonymous with local celebrations.

1970s – 1980s

Expanding Reach

The band travels more widely throughout Victoria, competing in Highland games and band competitions while continuing to serve the Bendigo community. New generations of local musicians are drawn to the pipes and drums.

1990s – 2000s

A New Millennium

As Bendigo grows and changes, the band adapts while honouring its roots. Performances at the newly redeveloped city centre, the Chinese Dragon Museum events, and the Bendigo Easter Festival keep the band visible and vibrant.

2010s – 2020s

Community Resilience

Through changing times — including the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic — the band remains a steadfast part of Bendigo's cultural life. We continue to play at Anzac Day services, memorial ceremonies, and community events both large and small.

Today

Nearly 90 Years Strong

As we approach our 90th anniversary, the Bendigo Highland Pipe Band stands as Bendigo's longest serving pipe band. We look to the future with optimism — welcoming new members, embracing new opportunities, and carrying the torch of Scottish tradition for the next generation.

A Living Legacy

History is not just something we remember — it is something we live. Every time we tune our drones, every time we strike up a march, and every time a new learner plays their first note, we add a new chapter to the story that began in 1937.

The Bendigo Highland Pipe Band belongs to its members, past and present, and to the community that has supported us for nearly nine decades. We are proud of where we have been, and excited for where we are going.
